Self care is sooo important. Studies have shown that it can reduce stress (which would probably be a bigger time saver for us worriers!) There are so many ways to practise self care – and so many benefits. The general idea that self care is selfish is wrong. Taking care of yourself means you will be better when helping others!

A study conducted a few years ago proved that students with lower academic stress practised self care. This made their experience much more enjoyable. I’m sure we could all do with less stress sometimes! And a more enjoyable school experience could possibly bring more people to want to do well in tests!

Caring for yourself can improve your quality of life, your self esteem, and your overall well-being! It’s good for your physical and mental health!

But, the questions is, what do you do? How do you actually practise self care?

Making Time for Self Care

Many people think that they don’t have time for self care, and I think that’s a common thing among students. A lot of our time is spent in school and doing homework and occasionally studying, that we want to just sit and watch TV in our free time. And if watching TV gives you energy, that’s great! That can be part of your self care. However, watching TV can often make people tired and give people headaches if they watch it for long enough. It’s also quite addicting – once I start watching a show, I feel like I can’t stop! Instead I read a book (or more commonly watch TikTok – although that’s definitely worse!). Whatever makes you feel happy is what you should be doing in your free time. Meaning there’s nothing wrong with watching TV (unless the end result is you feeling annoyed at yourself).

The phrase ‘I really want to, but I don’t have time’ is rubbish, because if you wanted to do something bad enough, you would make time for it. Everyone should want to practise self care enough to make time for it!

Lot’s of us might implement it into our lives without knowing it.This could be by playing sports, eating good food, showering/having a bath everyday or just doing something you enjoy! Honestly, it’s easier than most people think.

Summary

Okay, so, in summary, self care is important because it improves our mental and physical well-being, and reduces stress (which could help you to focus on school work which leads to better grades)!
